Pesto Project

I'm never happier than when I have a new project. That is not necessarily a good thing, as it often leads to entirely too many projects to juggle. But still, I love a new project.

And this one just fell in my lap. When I was watering a couple of days ago, I looked at the basil and wondered what to do with it. (You may remember that my basil was a freebie this year.) Then, as I was eating lunch today, I opened Margaret's newest post over at A Way to Garden and learned all about Pesto Fest. Tonight I'll be harvesting pesto, and tomorrow I'll be making my first pesto. Yes, really, my first pesto.

Hi! So glad to hear awaytogarden and dinnertonight's pesto fest is given you an answer re: what to do with that basil. Please don't think of it as a project--first pesto or no, making it is supereasy and very forgiving. Margaret's technique, little of this or that, works just fine. Taste as you go and tell us how you make the delicious combination of homegrown herbs, cheese and olive oil --nuts too if you want--your own. Cheers & nice to meet you. Yell if you have questions.
Best,

Yes, Ms Puchalla is right about the forgiving nature of pesto. It is one of many recipes which will be wonderful even if you don't follow the recipe exactly. I love foods like that: tabouleh, pesto, gazpacho, hummus, chili, etc...

Deb & Kenneth,

Well, if the healthy amount that I ate off the spoon before freezing the rest is any sign, this will be a good first pesto outing for me. I'm a good southern cook, but there's so much more out there to learn. Any links to good recipes for tabouleh and hummus? I've eaten both but wouldn't have the foggiest notion where to start...
